Editor's note: Fourth in a series of Personality Stories on the Top 10 academic students in the Loudonville High School Class of 2017.
Megan Ryals will follow in the footsteps of her older sister, Erica, by studying nursing at Ashland University.
"When Erica, now a sophomore at AU, was visiting perspective colleges to study nursing, I accompanied her, and we sort of mutually agreed that for us, AU was the best place to study," Ryals said. "It is a good school for nursing. You spend most of the first two years on the AU campus, and then get into the nursing classes the final two years at the Ohio State University-Mansfield campus."
Ryals, daughter of Sean and Sheri Ryals of rural Jelloway, said she selected nursing as a study and career option when her sister did. She is thinking about working in a nursing specialty, maybe anesthesiology or radiology, "but I am not sure at this point. Let me get into studying nursing, and we will see."
She credited her parents with pushing her to her 3.8 grade point average at Loudonville High School, noting "they both kept on top of me, making sure I keep up with my school work and pushing me to do my best."
She said she has to study hard to keep up her good grades.
"I have to study a lot," she said. "Of my subjects, math comes easiest to me, but other subjects, like science and history, do not. I have to study very hard to do well in them."
Ryals is active in LHS extracurricular activities. She plays the drums in the band, is secretary of the school's award winning Leo Club, and a member of the soccer team. She played basketball in her freshman and sophomore years, and was a member of the school's Teen Institute.
Outside of school, she is a longtime member of the Winner's Attitude 4-H Club in Mount Vernon and, among her projects, she has been raising rabbits and training her Labradoodle puppy.
She works summers at the River Run Canoe Livery, a job she enjoys very much.
Her mother is an elementary teacher in the East Knox School District, and she noted "her experience in education rubs off in the advice and encouragement she gives me to study and do well." He dad works with a construction firm in the Cleveland area.
