Loudonville's Cole Kirkbride and Mapleton's Gage Barone are this year's winners of the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame's Bill Mills Scholarship.
Kirkbride was a member of the Redbirds' cross country team, and he was a two-time captain and Most Valuable Runner. He is going to Ohio Northern University to study mechanical engineering and music. He also participated in National Honor Society, Robotics team, Leo Club, Student Council and Concert Band. He was on the honor roll all four years at Loudonville.
Barone is headed to Mount Vernon Nazarene to study nursing. At Mapleton, Barone played football and basketball, and he is the school's all-time leading scorer. He is a member of Grace Brethren Church Youth Group and enjoys riding dirt bikes. He had a 3.9 GPA and was a three-year National Honor Society member.
Each winner received $500.
The Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame has awarded $42,000 to 72 students since the scholarship was first awarded in 1996.
